Dr. Matthew W. Johnson

Dr. Matthew Johnson is an experimental psychologist and behavioral pharmacologist currently serving as a Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a Senior Investigator at Sheppard Pratt. He has played a role in the revival of psychedelic research for over two decades, publishing research on psychedelics in relation to mystical experience, personality change, tobacco smoking cessation, cancer distress treatment, depression treatment, psychedelic risks and safety guidelines, and ethics. In 2021, Dr. Johnson received the first grant in nearly 50 years from the US government to administer a classic psychedelic as a treatment, specifically psilocybin for tobacco addiction. He holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology and Behavioral Pharmacology from the University of Vermont and a B.S. in Psychology from Eastern Oregon University.
